San Ignacio-Santa Elena House of Culture holds stilt walking session in San Ignacio on Saturday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Ignacio-Santa Elena House of Culture/NICH is conducting stilt walking sessions in San Ignacio in an effort to engage young people and to promote and preserve the Maya heritage.

According to Benque Viejo del Carmen House of Culture/NICH Coordinator Nalleli Yacab the SISE House of Culture is holding an orientation session on Thursday at 3:30 pm and a training session on Saturday at 1:00 pm. San Ignacio-Santa Elena House of Culture/NICH is located in the building that previously housed the old San Ignacio Hospital.

Yacab said the stilt walking sessions will be conducted by Aide Sanchez, a former member of the Caracol Youth Development of Arenal, who has expertise in stilt making, costume design, and training. Yacab said Sanchez has participated in stilt walking competitions in Guatemala.

Yacab said that they have six stilts already made. She said the stilts are adjusted to the user’s knee height and their tennis shoes are attached to the stilts so they fit perfectly well.. 

The project aims to prepare the participants for the September celebrations and other cultural events

The SISE House of Culture said they already conducted a training session last Saturday but added they still have spaces for persons interested in stilt walking.
