By Breaking Belize News Staff: Today, the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town council issued a statement urging businesses to ramp up security following several robberies in the community.

“Keep your premises well-lit and consider installing security cameras. Train staff to approach and greet every customer; good customer service can be a powerful theft deterrent. Ensure valuable merchandise is secured and that the checkout area is staffed and monitored,” the council said.

The council urged businesses to minimize the cash on hand by using a safe and making regular bank deposits.

“Be discreet when handling money. Train employees on how to respond during a robbery (cooperate and prioritize safety over merchandise) and consider a panic button or alarm system,” the council added.
