By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Caye Caulker contractor has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being arraigned for the murder of a construction worker who was allegedly beaten by a group of men and struck in the head with a shovel.
Samuel Yam, 42, appeared unrepresented on Thursday before a Senior Magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, where he was read a single charge of murder. He is accused of killing 45-year-old Oscar Genaro Flota, a Belizean construction worker of Northside, Caye Caulker.
No plea was taken from Yam because murder is an indictable offence. Due to the nature of the charge, bail was denied, and he was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until September 14, 2026.
Police say that on Saturday, June 13, 2026, around 8:28 p.m., they received reports that a man had been severely beaten in the head with a shovel in front of Yam’s residence on Northside, Caye Caulker. Quick Response Team personnel later reported that the victim was being transported to the Caye Caulker Health Clinic in critical condition.
At the clinic, police observed Flota lying face up and apparently dead. He was later pronounced dead at 8:55 p.m. Police reported that Flota had three cut wounds to the left side of his head and one wound to the front of his head.
Initial investigation revealed that Flota, Efren Tesecum and others were socializing and consuming alcohol at Yam’s residence when an altercation reportedly broke out between Flota and Yam. Police allege that two other men, identified as Victor Pott and a person known only as “Gringo,” arrived at the location on a bicycle. One of them allegedly struck Flota with the bicycle, causing him to fall, after which others reportedly began beating him.
Police further allege that Yam then took a shovel from his yard and struck Flota in the head several times, causing the fatal injuries.
Investigators later visited the scene, where they observed a red substance believed to be blood on the street near a lamp post in front of Yam’s residence. A shovel with a red substance believed to be blood was also found inside Yam’s yard and was collected as evidence.
Yam was detained on Monday, June 15, and the file was forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions. He was formally charged with murder on Wednesday, June 17.
