By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Salvadoran national is behind bars after being arraigned on two counts of common assault in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
He is 34-year-old Walter Alexander Martinez Palacio, a construction worker who told the court he is a refugee living in Belize without legal status.
Palacio was accused of assaulting another man and his wife during an incident on Friday, September 5, 2025. In court, he pleaded guilty to assaulting the man but denied assaulting his wife, claiming she was only injured after stepping between him and the other man during the altercation.
The Senior Magistrate entered an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf for the charge relating to his wife.
Although no objection was raised to bail, Palacio was unable to meet the requirement and has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison until he can post bail.
