Saldivar says Mira matter proves he was wrongly labelled

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Former minister John Saldivar says recent developments have vindicated him over campaign contributions he received from an American businessman.

In a statement this week, Saldivar said Dr. Dylan Vernon has joined Jules Vasquez in stating that no law was broken and that he did nothing wrong in accepting the funds. Dr. Vernon is a co-author of a recent report on campaign finance reform.

“Now that the Mira Millions scandal has shown us what real corruption is it should be very clear to the objective thinker that there was a serious miscarriage when I was portrayed as a villain for finding a generous donor to help me to help my constituency,” Saldivar wrote.

He described his designation by the United States as a significantly corrupt person as maliciously construed, without legal basis, and against his fundamental due process rights.

Drawing his own comparison, Saldivar said his tranches were for the people and not from the people.

The allegations surrounding Oscar Mira are unproven and remain before the Auditor General. Saldivar says he awaits those findings and the Prime Minister’s response.
