By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Sagitun Girlz FC have secured another opportunity to represent Belize at the upcoming Central American Women’s Interclubs Championship, following their victory in the Premier Women’s League of Belize (PWLB) last Saturday. They triumphed over Napoles FC with a 2-0 aggregate win, establishing themselves as the nation’s top women’s football club.
The championship will bring together elite teams from across Central America. Set to be held in Panama from 18 to 24 July 2025, the championship will provide an invaluable platform for Sagitun Girlz to improve their competitive level.
Their championship victory was the result of a stellar season that saw Sagitun Girlz dominate throughout the 2024-2025 PWLB season. Finishing unbeaten and boasting one of the most formidable defensive records in league history—allowing only four goals all season—their road to the title was nothing short of amazing. Their commanding performance in the semi-finals included a 24-0 aggregate win over Cayo Dreamers, highlighted by Aranda’s double hat-trick in the second leg.
The decisive final against Napoles FC ended in a hard-fought 0-0 draw at Michael Ashcroft Stadium, with Sagitun Girlz holding their ground to secure the PWLB Championship. With a comfortable 2-0 advantage from the first leg, they knew they only needed to hold firm to claim their first PWLB title. Previously they had won the National Amateur Women’s League (NAWL), which preceded the PWLB. Despite relentless pressure from Napoles FC, Sagitun Girlz’ defence, led by goalkeeper Jasmin Armstrong and defenders Jasha Bernardez, Premille Hope, Marceli Mar, and MVP Karisha Coe, remained impenetrable.

Their journey to international competition has also been shaped by previous experience at the regional level. In July 2024, Sagitun faced tough opponents, suffering a 6-0 defeat to Costa Rica’s Liga Deportiva Alajuelense at the Cementos Progreso Stadium in Guatemala. They also lost 5-1 to Alianza of El Salvador before putting up a strong fight against Guatemala’s Xinabajul, narrowly falling 3-2 after leading 2-0 at half-time with goals from Kenya Perez and Khalydia Velasquez. Roshanny Narváez scored Sagitun’s only goal in the Alianza match to equalize at 1-1 before Alianza pulled away. Sagitun ultimately finished eighth after a 3-0 loss to Honduras CDF Under in the seventh-place game.
Despite setbacks in that tournament, Sagitun Girlz continued to grow, ultimately earning automatic qualification to the UNCAF Women’s Club Championship, set to be held in Panama from 18 to 24 July 2025.
Looking ahead to the international competition, Sagitun Girlz will strengthen their squad as they did last year when they brought in National Team players Roshanny Narváez, Khalydia Velasquez, and Mikhaila Bodden. With reinforcements expected, they aim to be even more competitive on the regional stage.
As they prepare for this new challenge, the Football Federation of Belize and the Sagi fans eagerly anticipate their performance in Panama. With national pride fuelling their journey, Sagitun Girlz are intent on improving on their past performances.
