By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean champions Sagitun GIRLZ will kick off their Central American Women’s Interclubs Cup participation with their toughest game as they face three-peat defending champions Liga Deportiva Alejuelense from Costa Rica on Friday. The match at the Estadio Cementos Progresso in Guatemala City is set to start at 2:00 pm.

Alajuelense defeated the other Costa Rican giant, Deportivo Saprissa, 1-0 in the 2022 final and then won the 2023 tournament 5-4 in a penalty shootout over Panama’s Tauro FC after a 2-2 draw.

The Sagitun GIRLZ, Alajuelense, and Guatemala’s Unifut are the only three teams that competed in 2023 that returned for this year’s tournament.

Sagitun GIRLZ starting lineup comprises goalkeeper Jasmin Armstrong, Karisha Coe, Maria Lopez, Ashley Rodríguez, captain Sabrina Eiley, Kenya Perez, Roshanny Narváez, Carlene Tillett, Tammy Baptist, Khalydia Velasquez, and Olivia DaCosta.

A Sagitun GIRLZ post said the substitute players are Mikhaila Bowden, Diana Vega, Jurshia Zuniga, Elva Nunes, Kelanie Forman, Libni Mojica, Gimayma Martinez, Dennisa Pineda, and Pauline Linarez.

Just like the other teams, Sagitun GIRLZ acquired five reinforcements for this tournament. They were joined by Jewel Fury’s Khalydia Velasquez and Elva Nunes and Napoles’ Roshanny Narváez, Carlene Tillett, and Dennisa Pineda. They were also strengthened by Mikhaila Bowden of United States club SO Cal FC.

Liz Zabaneh and Adrián González are listed as the coaches.

The technical staff also includes Shahina Godoy, Lala Palma, Warren Brooks, Reina Ramirez, and Arleni Forman.

Sagitun GIRLZ’s second game will pit them against El Salvador’s  Alianza at 11:00 am on Sunday, July 21. Their final group match will be against Guatemala’s Xinabajul at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 23.

Group A (See accompanying schedule) comprises Unifut Antigua of Guatemala, Santa Fe of Panama, Real Estelí of Nicaragua, and CDF Under of Honduras.
