By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 2026 Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge began Friday morning under the Hawkesworth Bridge in San Ignacio, with 58 teams competing across eight categories, igniting four days of intense paddling, national pride, and—this year—deep division. Despite weeks of escalating controversy over the organizers’ decision to move the traditional finish from the Belcan Bridge to the Grand Resort near the Haulover Bridge, the race began on schedule with the defending champions back to defend their crown.

Defending Champions Aim for a Fourth Straight Title

Slim and Trim Like Guava Limb return as the team to beat after a commanding 2025 performance that secured their third consecutive championship. The trio — Javier Guardado, Daniel Cruz Jr., and Andres Cabb Jr. — delivered one of the most dramatic finishes in race history last year, overturning a three‑second deficit to Memory Lane Global Missions in the final stage and powering through the Belize City channel to claim the Kinich Ahau trophy permanently.

Their dominance places them at the centre of attention again this year, but the river will test them against a deep field of challengers across:

– Men

– Women

– Masters

– Mixed

– Intramural

– Pleasure

– C2

– Family

The 58‑team turnout reflects the enduring appeal of the race, despite the current dispute.

Defending Champions Return After Historic 2025 Victory

Slim and Trim Like Guava Limb, the dominant force of the past three years, return to the river as the team to beat. The trio—Javier Guardado, Daniel Cruz Jr., and Andres Cabb Jr.—are coming off a commanding 2025 performance that secured their third consecutive title and allowed them to claim the Kinich Ahau trophy permanently.

Their victory last year was one of the most dramatic in recent memory. Entering the final stage with a three‑second deficit to Memory Lane Global Missions, the champions surged through the Belize City channel, overtook their rivals, and sealed their place in Ruta Maya history.

They now begin their quest for a fourth straight title under the shadow of a race divided.

A Race Overshadowed by a National Dispute

This year’s start comes after weeks of tension between the organizers—led by Love FM—and the Belize Canoe Association (BCA), paddlers, sponsors, and fans. The organizers’ decision to shift the finish line to the Grand Resort has been widely criticized as unilateral and dismissive of the paddlers who make the race possible.

The BCA, in its February 28 meeting, called the change “the biggest most selfish and ill-advised decision, since the start of the race in 1998.”

Paddlers have vowed to follow all official rules during the race, but many have committed to a symbolic protest on the final day: finishing at the Grand Resort, then turning their canoes toward the Belcan Bridge, the historic finish line.

The 2026 Route: Four Days, One River, Two Endings

The official stages remain unchanged until the final day:

Day 1 — Friday

San Ignacio → Banana Bank

Day 2 — Saturday

Banana Bank → Double Head Cabbage

Day 3 — Sunday

Double Head Cabbage → Burrell Boom

Day 4 — Monday

Burrell Boom → Grand Resort by the Haulover Bridge

The organizers insist the Grand Resort finish is safer and necessary due to upcoming reconstruction of the Belcan Bridge.

The paddlers, according to the BCA, insist the Belcan Bridge is the true finish line.

This year, both may happen.
