By Horace Palacio: Reports of undersea cable sabotage in Europe have sparked alarm around the world, with telecom giants and NATO countries warning that global internet stability is at risk. The main concern? That Russia may be targeting the physical infrastructure that supports international connectivity.
Subsea cables—often unnoticed by the public—carry the overwhelming majority of global internet traffic. While they sit on the ocean floor, out of sight, they are the backbone of digital economies like Belize’s.
In the last year alone, there have been at least 11 confirmed cable damages in the Baltic region. UK officials are also monitoring a Russian spy ship called Yantar, which they suspect is mapping key underwater infrastructure.
If major cables are cut or disabled, countries worldwide—including those far from the damage—could face communication disruptions, online banking outages, and data delays. Belize is no exception. Our businesses, government systems, and even day-to-day communications depend on a smooth international data flow.
Global telecom leaders are calling for urgent international coordination, better surveillance, and new rules to protect these cables. As global tensions rise, Belize must consider how resilient our digital infrastructure really is—and what steps we can take to ensure we’re not caught off guard if the web we rely on suddenly goes dark.
