Rural women rising: Building resilient futures

By Zoila Palma:  Today, October 15, the world marks the International Day of Rural Women under the theme “Rural Women Rising – Shaping Resilient Futures with Beijing+30.”

The day highlights the vital role rural women play in food production, environmental stewardship, and community development, while calling attention to the persistent inequalities they face.

Despite contributing nearly 40% of the global agricultural workforce—and over 50% in parts of Africa and Asia—rural women continue to have limited access to land, credit, education, and technology.

They own just 15% of agricultural land worldwide and face structural barriers that restrict their participation in decision-making and political life.

UN Women’s campaign emphasizes that empowering rural women is essential to ending poverty, achieving gender equality, and addressing climate change. Studies show that if women had equal access to resources, farm yields could rise by up to 30%, feeding as many as 150 million more people globally.
