By Breaking Belize News Staff: Running W Meats, one of Belize’s leading producers of meat and a staple at the annual National Agricultural and Trade Show, has announced it will not be participating at this year’s show, citing a national shortage of pigs for local supply.
According to Running W, the heavy exportation of pigs out of the country along with the high cost of pigs is putting a strain on local suppliers. The company, in a public statement, also shared that due to this shortage, its staff are now working less days. The company added that if it were to take its product to Agric, it would lead to a shortage of pork for national consumption.
Running W has called on the government to sit down with suppliers and discuss the issue of food security for local supply. The company says the issues has been going on since September 2024 and it has raised the issue with the government but the response has not been adequate. The company also noted that the issue js only with pork as there is excess beef in the country for local supply. Running W also noted that is the problem is not addressed, pork and ham will continue to be in short supply headed into the holiday season.
Running W thanked supporters for their understanding but are hoping for a meaningful and swift response from the government to address the core issue.
