By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize’s speed in transition proved the key to Belize’s surprise 106-102 victory over Brazil in Day One of the FIBA Under 18 Americas Cup on Monday at the Estadio Obras Sanitarias in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
“Mainly, we were just competing. Our running game,” Langford told FIBA after the match that saw Belize record their first victory in their first participation ever at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup.
“We know that they are bigger than us, stronger. We were a little bit faster. We knew we could use our speed. That’s what we emphasized.
Langford said Belize needs to play a similar game against the United States on Tuesday but added that they need to improve their defensive game.
“Mainly the same thing. We got to improve on defense a little bit. We had some mishaps. Mostly defense. We’ve got to fix that and I think we’ll be ok for a good little fight.”
Belize led after every quarter (24-23, 53-47 and 83-74) banking on 51 shooting percent from the floor (35/68). The team recorded a 23/43 effort from two-point territory (53 percent) and 12/25 beyond the arc (48 percent). They also converted 24 of 32 free throws (75 percent).
However, the team was outrebounded by Brazil to the tune of 59 to 41. Brazil also dished out 26 assists to Belize’s 13, though Belize made 12 steals to Brazil’s seven.
Josiah Moseley led Belize with 31 points while Langford sank 28. Moseley added eight rebounds and two assists while Langford added nine rebounds and two assists.
Elijah Favela and Ian Parham contributed 14 points apiece, Wilford Dawson added ten, and Devin Moody recorded seven points and seven rebounds.
In the other Group B game on Monday, the United States beat Argentina 88-66.
In Group A, Centrobasket subchampions Dominican Republic beat Canada 79-77 while Centrobasket champions Puerto Rico fell to Venezuela 80-69.
Next, Belize will then take on the most powerful opponents, number one seeded United States, on Tuesday, June 4 at 2:40 pm (5:40 pm Argentina time). Belize will close group play against Argentina on Wednesday, June 5, at 5:10 pm (8:10 pm Argentina time).
