By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old Belize City resident is on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being found with 5.1 grams of crack cocaine.

Timothy Herbert, a runman of Belize City, appeared late Tuesday evening before the Chief Magistrate in Court #1 at the Belize City Magistrate’s Court. He was charged with possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply following his arrest on Monday, February 23, 2026.

Police allege that around 5:25 p.m., officers from the Mobile Intelligence and Interdiction Team were on patrol along Flamboyant Street, heading from Mahogany Street toward the Riverside area, when their attention was drawn to a man riding a blue 20-inch bicycle.

According to police, the man appeared suspicious as he rode in the opposite direction of their patrol. Officers stopped and informed him that a search would be conducted for firearms and ammunition. During the search, police say they discovered a bright green container in his right hand containing a white, powdery substance suspected to be crack cocaine.

Herbert was escorted to the Mahogany Street Police Station, where the substance was weighed on a gram scale and amounted to 5.1 grams of crack cocaine.

In court, Herbert pleaded not guilty. He questioned why he was charged with possession with intent to supply. The Chief Magistrate explained that under the law, possession of more than one gram of cocaine constitutes the more serious offense of possession with intent to supply. If convicted, Herbert faces a minimum fine of $10,000 and/or three years imprisonment.

The court also noted that Herbert is indebted to the court in the sum of $305 from a previous conviction in July 2025. Given his extensive record of drug-related offenses, the Chief Magistrate inquired whether he was using drugs. Herbert denied drug use, stating that his father is deceased and that he is his mother’s sole caregiver and financial supporter, adding that he only smokes marijuana.

However, after reviewing his criminal record, the Chief Magistrate expressed concern and concluded that Herbert appears to be in need of rehabilitation. He was remanded to the Belize Central Prison with specific conditions, including mandatory enrollment in a rehabilitation program while on remand. The court indicated that bail will only be considered upon receipt of a progress report from prison authorities and compliance with the court’s conditions.
