By Aaron Humes: A single-vehicle rollover accident on the Hummingbird Highway has left one young woman dead and three others injured. The incident occurred in the early hours of December 22, around 1:35 AM.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith reported, “…police in Belmopan were advised that a motor vehicle was observed along mile 32 on the Hummingbird Highway in an overturned condition. The police officers proceeded to that location, and assistance was given to those individuals who were learned to be 4 in number and were escorted to the Western Regional Hospital for treatment. One of the individuals who was in the vehicle, namely Madeline Mendez, later succumbed to the injuries that she sustained in the incident.”
ASP Smith added, “What the investigators have ascertained so far is that the vehicle was being driven at the time by one Jalen Thompson, and they were coming from the South after going to a party, we are told, and sometime while approaching mile 32, Thompson lost control of the motor vehicle, causing it to overturn.”
Police have initiated an investigation into the accident, gathering evidence and conducting interviews. As part of the inquiry, Thompson has been served with a notice of intended prosecution. Authorities also collected a urine sample from him to determine if alcohol or drugs were contributing factors.
