By Aaron Humes: Despite his protestations of innocence, 34-year-old Robert Usher, convicted of multiple rapes, aggravated assault and sexual assault on a minor starting from the age of eight, will spend at least 26 years in prison as of Monday.
High Court Justice Candace Nanton set a term of 26 years, 12 months and 14 days for Usher, who changed his attorney after being convicted from Lynden Jones to Norman Rodriguez.
Usher was convicted following a trial in November of 2024. His accuser testified that she had been molested from the age of eight to 13, then raped three times before the age of 17, when she moved away from the neighbourhood where the incidents took place after a family member notified authorities.
Usher’s sentence consists of one year for aggravated assault, reduced from three due to mitigating factors; five years for the sexual assault from a maximum of ten; and 23 years on each count of rape less deductions of 13 months for mitigating factors, being a first-time offender and eight days served on remand.
The three sentences on each count of rape will run concurrently, but are consecutive to the first two counts; those counts also run concurrently with each other.
