By Horace Palacio: A robbery attempt at a local convenience store on Phillip Goldson Highway was foiled yesterday evening due to the prompt intervention of San Pablo villagers. Jay’s Mini Shop became the scene where two suspects were apprehended, thanks to community vigilance.

Police were alerted to the robbery around 5:45 pm on December 27th. Upon arrival, they found that the villagers had already detained Kenny Perez, 26, of Pomona Street, and Esmir Garrido, 26, of Antelope Street, both laborers from Orange Walk Town. The suspects, displaying injuries that were likely sustained during their detention, were taken into police custody. Perez had a swollen, cut wound on his left eye, and Garrido had a cut on his right ear. Both men were in pain and were taken to Northern Regional Hospital (NRH) for medical care.

The incident unfolded around 5:27 pm when two male Hispanics entered the store. Initially blending in with other customers, the situation took a turn when one of the men, wearing grey, brandished a knife and threatened a customer. This action prompted another customer to flee the scene.

Simultaneously, the second suspect, dressed in blue, coerced the store cashier with a silver knife, demanding money. Complying with the demands, the cashier handed over $1,668.40 in Belizean currency, along with two Belikin Stouts and a mine beer, bringing the total value of stolen items to $1,676.64. Following the theft, the assailants attempted to flee with the goods.

However, the swift response of the villagers led to the apprehension of the suspects and the recovery of the stolen property.

The incident is currently under police investigation.
