By Hugh O’Brien: Young, courageous and talented Nisani Mendez who hails from Belmopan has taken his homegrown skills from the Belize Premier Basketball League to the competitive courts of the NJCAA, and he is already making his presence felt. Through his first 10 games at Lamar State College – Port Arthur, Mendez, who also suits up in the No. 10 shirt, is averaging an impressive 15.7 points per game, showcasing his scoring ability, confidence, and rapid growth at the college level. His shooting record this season is 51.5% from the field and 42% from the 3-point range.
Mendez credits his early-season success to the unwavering support of his mother, Kathrine Nendez, whose sacrifice allowed him to pursue his education and basketball career in the United States. “Everything I do on and off the court is because of her,” he shared with gratitude.
Before arriving at LSCPA, Nisani redshirted at Arizona Christian University, where he trained alongside fellow Belizean talent Arik Nicholas. That experience, he says, played a major role in sharpening his mindset and work ethic. He continues to stay motivated by watching other Belizean-born players—such as Jahiem Ciego and Douglas Langford—who are also chasing their basketball dreams abroad. Their journeys fuel his determination to represent Belize with pride and push forward on his own path.
Beyond basketball, Mendez has his sights set on completing his degree in Business, with a long-term dream of advancing to the NCAA Division I level. His commitment to both academics and athletics reflects the discipline and ambition that set him apart.
As Nisani continues his college journey, fans back home and abroad are rallying behind the young star. His story is one of sacrifice, perseverance, and national pride—an inspiring reminder of what Belizean athletes can achieve with hard work and opportunity.
