By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 41-year-old American woman is facing multiple traffic charges following a collision with a Calypso Train on Marine Parade Boulevard that left three people injured, including a 79-year-old man and a 10-year-old boy, both of whom were on a tour of the city.
Taunya Lee Everest, an American housewife residing in Belize City, appeared before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, where she was arraigned on four traffic offenses: driving without due care and attention, using an unlicensed motor vehicle, driving without third-party insurance, and causing negligent grievous harm to a 79-year-old American tourist.
In court, Everest pleaded guilty to using an unlicensed motor vehicle and driving without insurance but denied the charges of driving without due care and attention and negligent grievous harm.
The court fined her a total of $210 for the two offenses she admitted to and disqualified her from driving in Belize for one year. She was also ordered to surrender her driver’s license but may apply for reinstatement after three months.
For the remaining charges, Everest was granted bail in the sum of $400 plus one Belizean surety, which she was able to meet. As a condition of her bail, she must report to the Queen Street Police Station every two weeks.
The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m. on April 21, when police responded to reports of a road traffic accident near Celebrity Restaurant on Marine Parade Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers observed a damaged black Volkswagen pickup and a Calypso Train with visible impact damage.
Ten passengers were on board the train at the time, with three reported injured. Among them were the 79-year-old, who sustained multiple abrasions and back pain, and a 10-year-old, who suffered a head injury. Both were transported to the hospital along with family members.
Police investigations revealed that Everest’s vehicle insurance had expired just over a month prior to the accident.
Everest is scheduled to return to court on June 11, 2026, as proceedings continue for the remaining charges.
