By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Get ready to pedal for a cause! The 14th Annual Reef Week, dedicated to the protection of Belize’s Barrier Reef, begins this Saturday, March 15th, with the traditional ‘Ride to the Reef’ cycling event.
Organized by Oceana Belize, the ‘Ride to the Reef’, going on its 12th year, is a symbolic journey emphasizing the interconnectedness of Belize’s ecosystems and the crucial need to ‘Build Resilience from Ridge to Reef!’ Participants will gather at 6:00 am in Belmopan and cycle to Belize City, finishing at Memorial Park by the Caribbean Sea.
This event is not just a ride; it’s a movement to safeguard Belize’s vibrant coral reef. Registration is free and open to all who are passionate about environmental stewardship. Interested individuals can register by emailing belize@oceana.org. Light snacks will be provided to participants.
The ‘Ride to the Reef’ marks the beginning of a week-long celebration, Reef Week 2025, which features a diverse lineup of activities designed to raise awareness and promote conservation. Throughout the week, events will include a swimming event from Goff’s Caye, educational initiatives, community clean-ups, marine photography competitions, social media trivia, and interactive video game experiences. The week will conclude with a grand educational fair in San Ignacio.
