By Breaking Belize News Staff: The controversial Revenue Authority Bill, 2026 is set to return to the House of Representatives today for its second reading following consideration by the Finance and Economic Development Committee.
The proposed legislation would establish a new Revenue Authority responsible for the administration and collection of domestic revenue and other public monies.
Prime Minister John Briceño, who introduced the bill on July 31, has said the proposed semi-autonomous authority would allow tax administration to recruit and retain employees with specialized skills more effectively than under existing public-service arrangements. He has maintained that the change is intended to improve tax administration rather than introduce new taxes.
The proposal, however, has drawn concerns from Belize Tax Service employees and the Public Service Union. Earlier this week, PSU President Dean Flowers questioned the governance structure proposed under the bill, arguing that an advisory board would lack sufficient authority and raising concerns over checks and balances within the proposed Revenue Authority.
A report from the Finance and Economic Development Committee on the bill is also scheduled to be presented during today’s sitting.
