Photos shared with Breaking Belize News show large water-filled potholes, uneven surfaces, and sections of the road that are nearly impassable, raising serious concerns as the island enters the peak of the tourism season.
According to residents, the worsening state of the road is causing frustration among both locals and visitors. Many tourists are reportedly avoiding the area altogether due to the difficult commute, a situation that threatens to directly impact local restaurants, bars, and businesses that rely heavily on tourism traffic during high season.
In addition to business concerns, residents warn that the poor road conditions pose a significant public safety risk. Emergency responders, such as fire services, police, and the RRR (Rapid Emergency Response), may struggle to reach residents or visitors in crisis due to flooded potholes and unstable road surfaces.
Adding to the danger is the complete lack of lighting in the area. Locals say the unlit, waterlogged road becomes even more hazardous at night, increasing the risk of accidents and delaying emergency assistance when it is needed most.
Residents say they are hopeful that local authorities will act before the situation worsens, especially as high season brings an influx of visitors to San Pedro.
