Rent, Electricity and water costs push housing expenses higher

By Zoila Palma:  The cost of housing and household utilities increased in July 2026, adding to the financial pressure on Belizean consumers.

The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) reported that the Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and other fuels category rose by 3.9 percent compared with July 2025.

The increase was mainly attributed to higher home rental costs, along with electricity and water tariff increases that took effect earlier this year.

For a household consuming 225 kilowatt-hours of electricity per month, the average cost increased from $84.25 in July 2025 to $91.50 in July 2026.

Water costs also moved higher during the period. A household consuming approximately 4,500 gallons per month saw its water bill increase from $86.38 in July 2025 to $91.13 in July 2026. The increases add to the monthly expenses faced by households already dealing with higher transportation and food costs.

In addition, Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) prices also contributed to the increase, with the average cost of a 100-pound cylinder rising by $7.44.
