By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize is mourning the loss of one of its cultural icons, Elfego Panti Sr., who passed away on February 5, 2025, at the age of 84.
Elfego Panti Sr. was a revered figure in Belize, renowned for his dedication as the caretaker of the Xunantunich Archaeological Site. He served in this role from the 1960s until 1996, helping to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the site. His passion for Belize’s history and his extensive knowledge made him an exceptional tour guide, beloved by locals and visitors alike.
“With heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved Elfego Panti Sr.—a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, tour guide, and dear friend. He touched so many lives with his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering love for his family and community,” his family said in the announcement of his death.
“As we mourn this immense loss, we also celebrate the beautiful legacy he leaves behind. His stories, guidance, and the warmth of his presence will forever remain in our hearts.”
In addition to his work at Xunantunich, Panti was a celebrated marimbist in San Jose Succotz and the Cayo District. He began playing the marimba at the age of 14 and for over 50 years traveled to surrounding village festivals and weddings with the Alma Beliceña Marimba group. His music brought joy to countless individuals and was a testament to his talent and devotion to Belizean culture.
Even in retirement, Panti remained active and continued to share his knowledge and passion. He worked at the ferry crossing to the Xunantunich ruins, serving as a tour guide to cruise ship tourists arriving by bus. His dedication to preserving and sharing Belize’s heritage never wavered.
Recently, the Panti family also faced the sorrowful loss of Elfego Panti Jr., adding to the profound grief experienced by the family and the community.
Elfego Panti Sr. was born on April 19, 1940.
