Renowned drum maker and cultural icon, Austin Rodriguez, passes away

By Aaron Humes: The National Institute of Culture and History and Minister of Culture, Francis Fonseca, have extended condolences to the family and friends of master drum maker, Austin Rodriguez, who has passed away.

Born on October 23, 1930, Rodriguez was a celebrated artisan and cultural bearer who dedicated over four decades to crafting Garifuna drums.

As the founder of the Austin Rodriguez Drum Shop in Dangriga, he not only perfected his craft but also ensured its continuation by training his daughters, Nori Lee and Daytha. Daytha, in particular, has become a devoted apprentice and the principal carrier of his legacy. Rodriguez’s drums have become iconic symbols of Garifuna culture, found across Belize and within the Garifuna diaspora.

The Ministry and Institute honor Rodriguez’s life, craftsmanship, and contributions to Belize’s cultural industry and heritage. His passing leaves a void in the cultural community, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of artisans and cultural bearers.

No announcement has been made as to funeral arrangements.
