Records for extreme temperatures broken; about 50 heat wave days forecast for inland Belize

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Belize’s weather experts continue to monitor weather conditions across the country reporting on extreme temperatures and issuing heat advisories as necessary.

Today, the National Meteorological Service of Belize issued a statement notifying that the daily maximum extreme temperature record have been broken for two areas, the Airport (Belize District) and Melinda (Stann Creek District).

The area near the Philip Goldson International Airport broke a 22-year-old record of 37.3C (99.1F) with a daytime high of 37.7C(99.9F) on April 3, 2024, an all-time record for that location. The previous record 37.3C (99.1F) occurred on March 18, 2003.

In addition, a 52 year-old record also fell at Melinda with the daytime high of 37.0C(98.6F) surpassing the old record of 36.7C (98.1F).

Weather experts say that above Seasonal temperatures are expected to continue across the country over the next few months as we move into the peak of the heat season in Belize (April to June 2024).

“As much as 50 heat wave days can be expected in inland Belize with 30 heat wave days elsewhere in the country over the next 3 months,” forecasters noted.
