By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City man whose theft arraignment was previously halted because of concerns over his mental state has been granted bail so he can seek a psychiatric evaluation, but remains at the Belize Central Prison after being unable to post the required bail.
Raymond Moody, 33, appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he was offered bail in the sum of $800 with one surety of the same amount.
Moody has been in custody since late August, when his arraignment on a theft charge had to be stopped after he reportedly appeared disoriented and gave the court several different names while showing uncertainty about basic personal details including his age, date of birth and address.
At that time, Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison ordered that Moody undergo a psychiatric evaluation before the court proceeds with the matter.
More than a month later, however, the evaluation has reportedly still not been completed.
The court has now granted Moody bail in the hope that relatives can assist him in obtaining a private psychiatric assessment so it can be determined whether he is fit to enter a plea.
Moody was unable to secure the $800 bail and was therefore remanded back to the Belize Central Prison.
The theft charge has not yet been formally put to him.
Police allege that on August 26, 2026, Moody stole a dark blue Samsung cellphone valued at $650, property of Tarique Campbell.
He is expected to return to court in December.
