By Aaron Humes: Last week, a video surfaced showing water pouring from the ceiling of the Racoon Street Police Station, sparking concerns about the facility’s structural integrity. However, Minister of Home Affairs Kareem Musa clarified that the source of the flooding was not due to damage, but rather a hatch that had been mistakenly left open during a recent rainfall.
In his statement, Musa admitted that the Racoon Street police station has struggled with leaks for decades, and while the roof remains intact, the current situation highlights the urgent need for a complete overhaul of the building. “We keep doing patchwork to it, but it is obvious that we need a completely new building,” he stated, noting that replacing the station will require significant investment. He added, “After we issued the press release, we discovered that the hatch was deliberately left open. Yes, the building does leak, but not to the extent that was initially perceived.”
In addition to the ongoing roof issues, the police station is now contending with a rodent infestation. Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith confirmed during a press briefing that exterminators have been called in to address the matter. Despite the challenges, Smith expressed confidence in the department’s efforts to resolve the situation. “We have contacted the relevant authorities and experts to assist,” she said.
When asked about the impact on staff, Smith reassured that while rodent issues are common in urban settings, the department is taking the necessary steps to ensure a safer working atmosphere.
