By Aaron Humes: The Belize Fisheries Department has officially announced the immediate cessation of Queen Conch (Strombus gigas) harvesting. This announcement comes as part of efforts to manage the country’s fisheries sustainably, following the guidelines set forth in Statutory Instrument No. 54 of 2012.
Effective immediately, all fishers are required to halt the wild harvesting of Queen Conch, with the fishing season for 2025-2026 closing at the end of business on Monday, April 6.
The Ministry further announced that all fishers currently at sea were to return to the mainland by Thursday, April 2, to deliver their catch to authorized points of sale or cooperatives.
The closure of the Queen Conch season is a measure designed to protect this vital species and support its recovery. Violators of the harvesting ban face serious consequences, including prosecution in a court of law as stipulated by the Fisheries Regulations.
The Queen Conch fishery will remain closed until it officially reopens on October 1.
