Quadruple Murder: Police identify four victims of Coastal Plain Highway massacre, including 16-year-old boy; five men detained as investigators probe possible links to recent shootings

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have officially confirmed the identities of four persons murdered in Friday morning’s deadly shooting along the Coastal Plain Highway, including a 16-year-old boy, as investigators probe possible connections to a string of recent shootings and intensify operations to prevent further bloodshed.

The victims have been identified as 16-year-old David Usher of Freedom Street, Belize City; 33-year-old Lloyd Leslie of Armadillo Street, Belize City; 23-year-old Robert Gladden of Freedom Street, Belize City; and 23-year-old Dayton Palacio, also of Freedom Street.

During Friday evening’s police press briefing, Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith confirmed that the Major Crimes Unit launched its investigation around 8:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a shooting between Miles 21 and 22 of the Coastal Plain Highway.

Responding officers discovered a red Ford Escape overturned with numerous apparent bullet holes. Two men were found unresponsive near the vehicle, while a third body was discovered approximately ten feet away. A fourth victim, identified as Palacio, was transported to the Southern Regional Hospital for medical attention but was subsequently pronounced dead.

Police have since intercepted a vehicle of interest travelling toward Belize City and detained five Belize City men for questioning. No firearms were recovered from the intercepted vehicle.

Investigators are also reviewing surveillance footage from cameras positioned at the La Democracia junction and another junction connecting the Coastal Plain Highway to southern Belize.

The killings come amid heightened tensions following several recent shooting incidents, including Wednesday’s attack on a residence in Belmopan reportedly associated with paralyzed street figure Ronlee Petillo.

When questioned about a possible connection between the incidents, Smith acknowledged that investigators were examining the circumstances and individuals involved, although no definitive link has been established.

Police were also asked whether the latest killings could be retaliatory. While declining to confirm any connection, Smith indicated that investigators were not dismissing the possibility that the recent violence was related.

She explained that gang-related violence can stem from several factors, including rivalries between opposing groups, disputes within the same gang, struggles for leadership and conflicts involving the drug trade.

Smith noted that internal gang conflicts can be particularly difficult to police because those involved are often familiar with one another’s movements and methods of operation.

Meanwhile, police have already implemented strategic changes to their deployment and are considering additional measures to contain the escalating violence.

Smith said the department intends to use every available resource and legal mechanism to pursue those responsible for the recent killings, including individuals who may have assisted the perpetrators before or after the crimes.

Police have not established a motive for Friday’s quadruple murder, and investigations remain ongoing.
