By Horace Palacio: The People’s United Party (PUP) candidate for Cayo Central, Alex Balona, is facing mounting criticism after mocking a freelance journalist’s speech impediment during a campaign rally in San Antonio Village, Cayo District.
The incident unfolded in front of a crowd of PUP supporters, where Balona, in an attempt to entertain the audience, imitated the journalist’s stutter. His remarks were met with laughter from attendees, but the incident has since sparked outrage online as videos of the moment spread.
The journalist, known as Pandy, responded today, expressing disappointment and frustration over the public mockery.
“I have been a journalist for years, and I never imagined that my speech impediment would be used as a punchline at a political rally. This isn’t about politics; it’s about basic decency and respect,” he said.
Many have called Balona’s behavior unprofessional and inappropriate, with some urging him to issue an apology. Others believe the incident raises concerns about the type of leadership Balona represents.
As of now, Balona has not issued a public statement addressing the controversy. With elections nearing, the backlash could pose a political challenge for the PUP in Cayo Central.
