PUP sustains robust momentum as fresh political hopefuls initiate their campaigns

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The People’s United Party (PUP) maintains its strong momentum with the emergence of new political contenders stepping into the arena.

Following a landslide victory in the recent Municipal Elections, where they secured 61 out of 67 seats, the PUP is witnessing a surge in aspirants vying to represent the party in various constituencies.

While official announcements regarding party conventions are pending, several individuals have initiated their campaigns with the aim of becoming PUP candidates in their respective areas.

Ramon “Monchi” Quiroz, a three-time contender in Municipal elections, is eyeing the Cayo North seat currently held by Michel “Micho” Chebat.

In Cayo Central, Alex Balona, recently appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, seeks reelection, though facing competition from Oscar Castaneda.

Additionally, there’s speculation about the potential candidacy of former Government Minister Daniel Silva for the same constituency.

Elsewhere, the Corozal Bay Constituency, represented by Elvia Vega Samos, may witness a shift as Thea Garcia Ramirez enters the race.

Meanwhile, in Toledo East, CEO Osmond Martinez has launched his campaign, amid rumors surrounding the departure of Area Representative Mike Espat, who nonetheless initiated a social media campaign.

Espat has also criticized Martinez for capitalizing on initiatives attributed to Plan Belize.

With the PUP’s resounding victory in 2020 and the Briceno administration approaching its fourth year marked by a focus on “rebounding and rebuilding,” the party continues to attract both seasoned and youthful political aspirants, showcasing its enduring appeal and support base.
