PUP says this is the year, but can Aaron Mai actually beat Earl Trapp?

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Four terms. Four wins. Earl Trapp has held San Ignacio and Santa Elena through every challenger the PUP has thrown at him, and now he is going for a fifth.

The PUP says 2027 is different.

Last month, at the party’s National Party Council meeting in Dangriga, Prime Minister John Briceño boasted that the Twin Towns are coming home.

“We are going to win San Ignacio and Santa Elena for the People’s United Party,” he told the room.

The party has since assembled what it calls its strongest municipal slate yet. Leading it is Aaron Mai, a two term councilor and the only PUP voice currently sitting on the town council. Behind him: Edel Espat, Matthew Preston, Joe Awe, Nadime Hegar, Eliu Yacab and Nazim Lisbey.

But there is a problem, and it is a big one.

Not a single candidate from Santa Elena made the cut. Danielle Rodriguez tied for the last spot at 110 votes and lost it on a coin toss. Omar Rodriguez finished well back at 66.

So half the municipality heads into the race with nobody from their own side of the river on the ballot for councilor.

Confidence is easy in August. Ballots are counted in 2027.

Does the missing Santa Elena candidate matter to you?
