By Zoila Palma: The People’s United Party (PUP) is mourning the passing of Antonio “Tony” Zabaneh, a businessman and former Chairman Extraordinaire of Independence Village in the Stann Creek District.
The PUP says that Zabaneh was “a true Belizean patriot,” recognizing his longstanding contributions to the southern community and Belize’s agricultural sector.
Zabaneh served as chairman of Independence Village for many years, with his last term ending in 2016. He played an instrumental role in establishing Big Creek Port, initially focused on banana exports, which has since grown into a major port handling imports and exports, including sugar and fuel products.
In 1971, he established the Banana Growers Association and served as its chairman from its inception. Under his leadership, the association launched a rehabilitation plan in 1972 to restore banana farms and resume exports to the United Kingdom.
Beyond business and agriculture, Zabaneh was passionate about sports and youth development. He coached the well-known Sagitun girls’ softball team and supported the Sagitun boys’ football team, while also maintaining a strong interest in boxing.
The PUP said that Zabaneh was a trailblazer whose influence extended across numerous business ventures and community initiatives. “Belize has lost a great Belizean and this country and particularly the South is better because he was here,” the release stated.
PUP Leader and Prime Minister John Briceño, Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde, Party Chairman Henry Usher, the National Executive, and the party extended condolences to his family.
