By Horace Palacio: The People’s United Party (PUP) has strengthened its political grip on Belize, securing a dominant 26-5 victory over the United Democratic Party (UDP) in the 2025 General Elections.
With Belizeans turning out in large numbers to vote, the PUP’s victory was evident early in the counting process, as the party maintained control of key divisions across the country, including Belmopan, Orange Walk, and Toledo.
Despite the overwhelming support for the PUP, the UDP managed to retain five seats, holding onto a few strongholds in Belize City, Corozal, and Cayo.
UDP candidates Tracy Panton (Albert), Lee Mark Chang (Mesopotamia), Godwin Haylock (Queen’s Square), Hugo Patt (Corozal North), and Miguel Guerra (Cayo West) managed to defend their divisions, while the rest of the UDP collapsed under the PUP wave.
The PUP, led by Prime Minister John Briceño, will now continue its administration with an even stronger mandate, focusing on economic development, social programs, and national security.
For the UDP, the election results raise serious concerns about the party’s future, as it now struggles to remain relevant in Belize’s shifting political landscape. Party officials will likely reassess their leadership and strategy moving forward.
With the PUP’s landslide victory, the next five years will be crucial in determining whether the party can maintain the confidence of the Belizean people, or if a stronger opposition will emerge before the next election cycle.
