By Aaron Humes: Last evening a shooting left one teenager dead and another injured in the Cerro area of Punta Gorda Town, Toledo District.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the lifeless body of 17-year-old Jimmy Cus, a Belizean laborer from Stann Creek Street. Initial investigations indicate that Jimmy, along with his companion, 18-year-old Darwin Meraz of Cero Road, was walking along Cero Road when they were ambushed by an unidentified assailant. The gunman opened fire, resulting in fatal injuries to Jimmy and superficial wounds to Darwin.
Both were taken to the Punta Gorda Community Hospital, where Meraz was treated for his injuries. Cus was pronounced dead at 10:01 PM.
Punta Gorda Police have launched an investigation into the shooting. Investigators continue to seek information regarding the incident and urge anyone with knowledge to come forward.
