By Horace Palacio: A five-month-old baby girl’s diagnosis of congenital cataracts has left her Punta Gorda family desperately seeking help to restore her vision. Sherae Mendez, blind since birth, faces a daunting wait for surgery in Belize, prompting her parents to explore options in Mexico and appeal to the community for financial assistance.

“We are filled with fear and uncertainty,” said Shenae’s mother, also named Shenae Mendez. “The thought of Sherae losing her vision permanently is unbearable. We are doing everything we can to find a way to get her the treatment she needs.”

The family has been informed that the wait for cataract surgery at the Belize Visual Impaired Center could be as long as July 2025. This delay has fueled their urgency to seek alternative options, including traveling to Merida, Mexico for potential treatment.

In an effort to raise the necessary funds for travel, medical procedures, and accommodations, the family is reaching out to friends, family, and the wider community. They are hopeful that someone may have experienced a similar situation and can offer guidance or support.

“Any contribution, no matter how small, would make a tremendous difference in our efforts to give Sherae a chance to see,” said Ms. Mendez. “We are grateful for any assistance and appreciate the community’s compassion and support during this difficult time.”

The family has provided their Belize Bank account number for those wishing to donate: 189632010220000 in the name of Shenae Mendez. They can also be reached at 615-2760 for further information or assistance.
