By Zoila Palma: The Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has notified the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of an anticipated material shortfall in electricity generation services, prompting the PUC to review BEL’s submission for a possible emergency declaration.
The PUC announced that BEL has formally submitted a notice declaring an anticipated emergency concerning generation services.
This comes following ongoing concerns over the reliability and availability of electricity generation to meet the country’s demand.
According to the PUC, BEL’s submission is being reviewed in accordance with the Request for Proposals (RFP) Regulations, 2024, under Statutory Instruments Nos. 137 and 153. The regulations establish the legal framework for addressing situations where additional generation services may be required.
The PUC said the RFP Regulations “provide clear guidelines for the process, promote transparency, and establish the roles and responsibilities of participants in this RFP process.”
The Commission added that its role is to “apply these frameworks consistently and transparently” while reviewing BEL’s submission.
This comes as Belize has experienced heightened pressure on its electricity system, including recent load shedding and power supply disruptions.
BEL has previously warned that generation availability and demand pressures could require measures to maintain stability of the national grid.
