By Zoila Palma: The Public Service Union (PSU) says it is monitoring reports of alleged misconduct within the Public Service, including allegations involving officers in the Customs and Immigration Departments.
The union stressed that representing a member does not mean condoning misconduct and that every public officer is entitled to fair representation and due process.
The PSU said its position is guided by the principle that union membership should never shield anyone from accountability. “Representing a member is not condoning misconduct,” the union stated.
The union also pointed to Section 82(2)(e), (f), (g) and (h) of the Public Service Regulations, which addresses misconduct and conduct that may call an officer’s integrity into question. “The PSU will defend due process. We will not defend wrongdoing,” the union declared, while calling on Ministries and relevant authorities to act promptly, impartially and transparently when allegations arise. “Where misconduct is established by credible evidence, it cannot be justified, excused or protected,” the PSU added.
The PSU emphasized that accountability and workers’ rights can coexist, arguing that both are necessary for a professional Public Service. “Corruption and misconduct erode public confidence and dishonour the many Public Officers who serve with honesty and dedication,” the union said.
It urged its members to uphold integrity, professionalism and transparency, while reaffirming its commitment to helping build a Public Service that is accountable and dedicated to the people of Belize.
