Protected Areas Conservation Trust visit Chiquibul National Park to conduct monitoring and evaluation

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On May 23 and 24, 2024, the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) visited Chiquibul National Park to conduct a monitoring and evaluation visit for its Extraordinary Investment with Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD).

The investment entitled “Strengthening Landscape Management in the Western-Maya Mountains”, which runs from 2022 to 2026, has recently entered its second year.

PACT noted that the main purpose of the program is to heightened management of key protected areas in the Western Maya Mountain landscape through biodiversity, cultural and headwater monitoring, enforcement capacity, and financial viability.

During the visit, the impacts of year one was reviewed, and the challenges and recommendations for year two were discussed.

Over the past year, 203 patrols were made throughout the area, 267 features in the Chiquibul Cave System zone were identified, and an increase in visitor satisfaction was recorded.

 Despite the many challenges they face in managing the Chiquibul National Park, we commend the team on the progress being made in the area as it contributes to sustainably enhancing Belize’s National Protected Areas Systems. We look forward to their continuous commitment in safeguarding Belize’s natural resources and seeing them achieve their program goals over the next three years.
