By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In an effort to promote sustainable practices and bolster school gardening programs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food security, and Enterprise (MAFSE), in collaboration with the Pesticide Control Board, conducted two engaging gardening sessions on Tuesday in San Jose Succotz in the Cayo District.

Extension Officer Adelita Jones and Riccy Garcia from the Pesticide Control Board led the instruction, providing valuable insights into sustainable gardening practices.

The morning session was held at San Jose Succotz Roman Catholic (RC) Primary School, while the afternoon session took place at Victorious Nazarene Primary School.

During the morning session at San Jose Succotz RC, both students and teachers were given demonstrations on the safe use of pesticides, emphasizing the importance of protecting their health and the environment. The session also focused on proper crop harvesting techniques to maintain freshness and quality, as well as effective washing methods to ensure food safety.

In the afternoon, a similar hands-on session was held at Victorious Nazarene.

“These sessions are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen school gardening programs and encourage students to practice safe and sustainable farming,” MAFSE said in a statement posted on social media.

MAFSE said both the Ministry and the Pesticide Control Board remain dedicated to instilling these practices in young minds, fostering a healthier and more environmentally-conscious future.
