Prison officer arraigned on rape charge; released on $5,000 bail

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 41-year-old prison officer, Oferio Ico, was arraigned on Monday in Belize City on a charge of raping a 33-year-old woman in the Ladyville area. Ico, a resident of Silver Creek Village in the Toledo District, was granted bail despite the serious nature of the charge.

According to court reports, the alleged incident occurred on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in the Lords Bank area of Ladyville. The victim, who knew the accused, reported to police the following day that she was at home when Ico allegedly forced her to have sexual intercourse against her will.

During the arraignment, Ico’s attorney, Hurl Hamilton, successfully applied for bail on his client’s behalf. The prosecutor did not object, but requested conditions be placed on the bail. Magistrate Ludlow Black granted bail in the amount of $5,000 plus two sureties of $2,500 each.

Conditions of Ico’s bail include not interfering with the victim or her family, staying at least 100 yards away from her, and reporting weekly to the Punta Gorda Police Station.

No plea was taken from the accused, as is standard practice at the lower court for this type of offense. Ico’s next court date is set for October 10, 2025.
