Prison guard injured after warning shots fired at mentally unstable inmate who tried to climb fence

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A prison guard was injured during a disturbance at the Belize Central Prison around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, after warning shots were fired at an inmate with a reported mental condition who tried to climb a fence in the compound during processing.

Chief Executive Officer of the Kolbe Foundation, Virgilio Murillo confirmed with Breaking Belize News (BBN) that the inmate, Lincoln Myvett, was brought to prison this afternoon and was being processed when he attempted to climb a fence in the compound. Murillo noted that had he succeeded, he would have still been in the prison compound but when warning shots were fired, he hopped off the fence and was quickly detained.

The officer who was injured was reportedly struck with a bullet that may have ricocheted. Doctors have seen the officer and have since discharged her.

Murillo made it clear, “Anyone who attempts to climb any fence in our prison will face warning shots and if they do not comply we will proceed accordingly.” Murillo also noted the disturbance was nothing close to an attempted escape and the situation was brought under control quickly.

BBN understands Myvett was brought in on Tuesday morning on a burglary charge. A full investigation is underway and a report on the prison officer’s injury will follow.
