Prime Minister: Unemployment falls to historic low

By Zoila Palma:  At today’s Budget presentation, Prime Minister John Briceno said that in 2025, Belizean households experienced a meaningful easing of price pressures.

“Inflation fell to 1.1 percent, down sharply from 3.3 percent in 2024 and the near-record high of 6.3 percent in 2022, supported by lower fuel and communication costs and the continued normalization of international supply and freight conditions.

Our labour market performed exceptionally well,” the Prime Minister explained.

The PM said that unemployment fell to a historic low averaging 2.0 percent in 2025, down from 2.6 percent the year before, driven by job creation in service-oriented industries, particularly wholesale and retail trade, as well as in the tourism sector.

PM Briceno said that more Belizeans entered the labour force, and wage growth outpaced inflation-strengthening real incomes and boosting purchasing power for families across the country.
