By Zoila Palma: Prime Minister John Briceño paid an official visit to Honduras on August 24, 2026, where he met with Honduran President Nasry Asfura at the Presidential House in Tegucigalpa to discuss ways of strengthening relations between Belize and Honduras.
The meeting focused on expanding bilateral cooperation and advancing initiatives that could benefit both countries.
The two leaders discussed several areas of mutual interest, including health, security, trade, regional integration, climate change and connectivity.
They reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation, with particular emphasis on strengthening security and information sharing to address drug trafficking and other transnational threats, while also exploring opportunities for greater collaboration in the health sector.
Trade and investment were also high on the agenda, with Prime Minister Briceño highlighting the possibility of pursuing a trade agreement between Belize and Honduras. He noted that Belize’s existing trade arrangements with Guatemala and its recently signed Partial Scope Agreement with El Salvador provide a foundation for deeper economic integration with Central America, making Honduras an important potential partner.
Regional integration and connectivity were also discussed as Belize seeks to strengthen its engagement with Central America while maintaining its Caribbean identity. As Belize currently holds the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Central American Integration System (SICA) for the second half of 2026, Briceño reaffirmed Belize’s commitment to advancing cooperation on regional issues.
The leaders also explored opportunities to improve air connectivity and the movement of people and goods between Central America and the Caribbean, including through Belize’s participation in initiatives associated with COCESNA.
Prime Minister Briceño welcomed the opportunity to further strengthen the longstanding friendship between Belize and Honduras, pointing to the close people-to-people ties between the two countries, including Honduras’ significant community in Belize.
The Belizean delegation included Health Minister Kevin Bernard, Chief Executive Officer Narda García, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade CEO Ambassador Oscar Arnold, Health CEO Dr. Julio Sabido, and Belize’s Honorary Consul in Tegucigalpa, Richard C. Vinelli Reisman.
