By Aaron Humes: Category 5 Hurricane Melissa is expected to make landfall between tonight, Monday, and early Tuesday in southern Jamaica, west of the capital, Kingston.
Following outcry on social media that they have felt abandoned by the Government ahead of the hurricane’s arrival compared to fellow students, Prime Minister John Briceño and the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Education have responded, stating that they have done what they can and will do more once the system passes. Still, Belize is not in the same situation as countries closer to Jamaica.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness reached out to Briceño this morning, saying that Jamaica would offer assistance where it could, and the P.M. says all Belizeans on the island, to his knowledge, have found shelter: “Many of them are staying in the home of the Honorary Consul, I think it’s a Mrs Arthurs, and the others are staying in their schools where it is safe, or in an area that has been designated as a shelter during a hurricane.”
70 students are affected; the P.M. noted that even while other countries were able to repatriate students, some, such as the Bahamas, said they would have to pay their own way back when classes resume. At least one, Antigua and Barbuda, put their students up in the Pegasus Hotel.
At 6 p.m. Belize time per the National Hurricane Center, the eye of Hurricane Melissa was located near latitude 16.6 North, longitude 78.6 West, 155 miles southwest of Kingston and 335 miles southwest of Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Melissa is moving slowly toward the northwest at 2 miles per hour. A slow turn toward the north is expected tonight, followed by a turn toward the northeast at a slightly faster forward speed on Tuesday. A northeastward motion with a faster forward speed is expected on Wednesday and Thursday. On the forecast track, the core of Melissa is expected to move near or over Jamaica by early Tuesday, across southeastern Cuba Tuesday night, and across the southeastern or central Bahamas on Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds are near 175 miles per hour with higher gusts.
