By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Prime Minister John Briceno has returned from his trip in Italy where he was scheduled to meet with Pope Francis.
However, that was cancelled since he will now meet with Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, Jose Abelardo Mai following protests and road blockades by members of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association.
During an interview with 7News Belize, PM Briceno noted that he returned because this is a very important issue and expressed disappointment that they were unable to reach to a compromise.
“I think that it is a very important issue. I must say that I am disappointed that it was not resolved. On Friday night, I thought that we had reached an agreement. Then on Saturday when I was already on the plane, I found out that some other issues came up. The team, Minister Mai and his team worked through the weekend and they still couldn’t find a compromise,” the Prime Minister said.
While he would have loved to meet the Pope, the PM says that this is more important and that is the reason he returned swiftly.
