By Horace Palacio: During his New Year’s address, Prime Minister John Briceno proudly highlighted the significant strides made in education and healthcare in Belize in 2023, marking it as a year of substantial progress in these vital sectors.
In the realm of education, Prime Minister Briceno pointed to the government’s unwavering commitment, which was evident in the record-breaking number of approximately 6,000 tertiary-level students benefiting from scholarships and subsidies. As noted by the Prime Minister, this investment in education is a strategic move towards developing Belize’s human capital and preparing a skilled workforce for the future. He emphasized the introduction of the innovative STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) curriculum, designed to bridge the skills gap and channel future employees and entrepreneurs into a more dynamic, globally competitive economy.
Prime Minister Briceno expressed his belief that the nation’s most valuable resource is its people. He stressed that the focus on education is a direct investment in the future of Belize, aiming to equip young Belizeans with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in an increasingly complex and technologically advanced world.
Turning to healthcare, Prime Minister Briceno highlighted the significant advancements made in this sector. With nearly 220,000 Belizeans now covered under the national health insurance (NHI) program, this expansion in coverage aligns with the government’s commitment to ensuring comprehensive healthcare coverage for every Belizean. He also announced that funding has been secured for major healthcare projects, including the construction of a new hospital in San Pedro and a tertiary-level teaching hospital in Belmopan.
These healthcare developments, as underscored by Prime Minister Briceno, underscore the government’s dedication to improving the health and well-being of Belizean citizens. The expansion of the NHI and the establishment of new healthcare facilities are crucial steps towards providing accessible and high-quality healthcare services nationwide.
In his address, Prime Minister Briceno conveyed that the progress in both the education and healthcare sectors is a testament to the government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Belizeans. By prioritizing these fundamental areas, the government is not only addressing immediate needs but also laying a solid foundation for a healthier, more educated, and prosperous Belize in the years to come.
