Prime Minister John Briceño has clarified that Belize’s Ambassador to Guatemala, José Alpuche, has not been formally recalled from his diplomatic post.

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Speaking to reporters after returning from the United Nations General Assembly, Briceño said Alpuche was asked to return to Belize for consultations as the Government considers its response to the disputed Guatemalan military aircraft incident.

Briceño explained that bringing an ambassador home for discussions does not automatically mean that the diplomat has been recalled from the posting.

The Prime Minister said Government must first hold discussions and determine what action should follow.

He also stressed the importance of Belize maintaining diplomatic communication with Guatemala despite the latest disagreement.

“We are neighbors. That’s not going to change,” Briceño said.

The Prime Minister said he intends to meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Security Council this week.

Briceño said he would also recommend that Guatemala’s Ambassador to Belize be called in to provide an explanation regarding the aircraft incident.

Belize maintains that Guatemalan military aircraft FAG706 entered Belizean airspace on September 24. Belizean officials say the country’s primary and secondary radar information supports that account. Guatemala has disputed Belize’s version of events.

Briceño has described the reported incident as unacceptable and said Belize intends to raise its concerns with international partners.

Despite the tensions, Briceño said Belize must maintain good relations with Guatemala as the two countries continue pursuing a peaceful resolution of their longstanding territorial dispute.

Alpuche remains listed as Belize’s Ambassador to Guatemala.
