By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Office of the Prime Minister announced on Monday that Prime Minister John Briceño has departed Belize on duty leave to attend the United Nations Ocean Conference 2025, taking place in Nice, France.
Prime Minister Briceño left the country on June 7, 2025, to participate in high-level discussions focused on ocean conservation, sustainable marine development, and the global response to climate change affecting coastal nations like Belize.
The conference brings together world leaders, scientists, and policymakers to address urgent challenges such as marine biodiversity protection, sustainable fisheries, and the impact of climate change on coastal communities.
Prime Minister Briceño’s participation aligns with the conference’s focus on accelerating global action to safeguard ocean health and support sustainable development
During his absence, Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde, who also serves as Minister of Natural Resources, Mining, and Petroleum, has assumed the role of acting Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister is expected to return to Belize on Sunday, June 15, 2025.
