By Aaron Humes: According to Prime Minister John Briceño, Marcos Osorio, the chair of the Sugar Industry Control Board (SICB), confirmed this morning that the mill had run out of cane to grind and that the season which began in December officially ended today.
Fusarium wilt disease has been taking a toll on the crop in addition to adverse weather conditions – heavy rain both last year and earlier this year.
As of last November, some 60 thousand acres of cane has been affected with a loss of 20 percent across Corozal and Orange Walk.
Approximately 880 thousand tons of sugar cane had been processed but the tons cane/tons sugar ratio is up to 11.2, resulting in only 78 thousand tons of sugar produced, among the lowest yields in recent year. Farmers will be reduced to $65 per ton, losing $31 million compared to last year.
The P.M. said Belize cannot repeat the mistakes seen with citrus, when disease withered the fields and reduced yield.
